For many, the best moments on a ski holiday happen off the slopes. Whether you’re looking to shimmy in your salopettes all night long or fancy continuing the adrenaline-fuelled adventures tobogganing, husky-sledding and more, these resorts have got your après activities covered. And guess what? They’re all within easy reach of Chambery Airport!
Courchevel
Distance from Chambery Airport: 100km
This glamorous ski spot is made up of four villages, each offering something a little different. Courchevel Moriond (1650) is known for its nightlife, while Courchevel 1850 brings the glitz and glamour. What they all have in common is a dazzling dining scene, with seven Michelin-starred restaurants between them. You can catch some of the best bands in the Alps at Le Bubble or snuggle under a blanket by the log fire at the Fire and Ice Bar. Ready for some R&R? Head to Aquamotion, a swimming and wellness centre complete with pools, slides and a surf simulator!
Méribel
Distance from Chambery Airport: 102km
When the lifts stop for the day, Méribel’s just getting started. You’ll find the famous La Folie Douce here, a hotspot known for its piste-side parties. Le Rond Point is another highlight. It’s ski-in, ski-out, so you can go from whizzing down slopes to sipping on cocktails in no time. Fancy a bite to eat? There’s no shortage of restaurants serving up Savoyard specialities like raclette and fondue. You could even enjoy an evening meal on the mountain, thanks to the Chalets gondola, which runs until 11:30pm.
La Plagne
Distance from Chambery Airport: 102km
Off-slope thrills are La Plagne’s specialty. Zoom down the Olympic bobsleigh track, the only one of its kind in France, or explore a grotto filled with ice sculptures on the Bellecôte glacier. The resort is made up of several small villages, but Belle Plagne is your best bet for nightlife. Le Saloon is one of the most popular picks, an American-themed bar with daily DJ sets that stays open until the early hours.
Val Thorens
Distance from Chambery Airport: 122km
Val Thoren has an après scene to rival the first-class skiing, which makes it a match made in winter heaven. There are few places better for a post-ski pint than Europe’s highest pub, The Frog. Or how about dancing until dawn on the biggest dancefloor in the Alps at Le Malaysia? If you’re after something a little different, there’s the longest toboggan run in France, the Cosmojet, to conquer.
Alpe d’Huez
Distance from Chambery Airport: 132km
Après comes in all forms in Alpe d’Huez. Capitalise on the resort’s bluebird days on a sun-soaked terrace at spots like the New Sphere Bar. The Free Ride Bar should be on your bar-crawl list too. At 9pm, a stock exchange system kicks in, meaning the price of drinks goes up and down. Beyond the myriad of bars, Palais de Sport leisure centre is a hub of activity, with crazy golf, an ice-skating rink and climbing wall to keep you occupied.
